For those of us that loved the Wizard of Oz as a Child? Ever wonder what the real story behind the witches in that wonderful cinematic piece that has been loved by millions over the years? Well Wicked, the Broadway theater mega-hit gives us some insight into just that.
Wicked takes us back to a time before Dorothy, Toto and the rest of the gang to show us the real story behind the Wicked Witch of the West, named Elphaba, and her counterpart, the Good Witch, Glinda. Wicked takes us back to the school time days of these two witches to find that Elphaba was once an impassioned, compassionate Good Witch, in sharp contrast to her school roommate Glinda, who later became the 'Good Witch' in the traditional story. Classic songs from the Wicked musical score include: Popular and Defying Gravity.
The show Wicked is a fun romp in the world of 'what if's' if there ever was one. Buy your tickets to see Wicked at any number of theaters around the country.
When Wicked first hit the Broadway Theater scene, in October 2003, at the George Gershwin Theatre in New York City; It was the buzz of the town. Lead roles in Wicked during the opening night, were immortalized by current Broadway superstars: Glinda (the 'good' witch) was opened by Kristin Chenoweth (who was nominated for a 2004 Tony award as Glinda in Wicked on Broadway...and later stared in The West Wing television program); Elphaba (the 'wicked' witch of the west) was opened by Idina Menzel (who won a 2004 Tony award as Elphaba in Wicked on Broadway); and Flyero was opened by Norbert Leo Butz (who later won a 2005 Tony award as Freddy in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels on Broadway). Though the Show was nominated for a Tony Award in 2004, it lost to Avenue Q; but has since become a huge success and has created multiple Wicked traveling shows thoughout the country.
